Abstract
What is the relationship between the distributions of income, wealth, and CO2 emissions across the population in Italy? We study the association between income, wealth, and types of CO2 emissions across households in Italy. We construct a novel database for this purpose. We find that CO2 emissions are highly concentrated at the top of the consumption, income, and wealth distribution. We also distinguish consumption-based and investment-based CO2 emissions and found that emission via investment are increasingly more concentrated at the top of the wealth distribution and increasingly less at the top of the income distribution. We also find that CO2 emissions have decreased across the population between 2008 and have done more so at the top of the CO2 emissions distribution only before the financial crisis.
